Health2047 Spins out First Mile Care to Reverse Prediabetes in the U.S. With $2M in Seed Funding, First Mile Care Will Build a Scalable On-Demand Preventative Care Platform

MENLO PARK, Calif., – Oct. 9, 2018 — Health2047 Inc. today announced the spin out of First Mile Care, a preventive chronic care company that is building an affordable, scalable and sustainable platform to improve the lives of people who have prediabetes. Development is already underway for First Mile Care’s initial platform offering which enables community-based peer-to-peer connection for chronic conditions. The platform will give people living with prediabetes – higher-than-normal blood sugar level but not yet Type 2 diabetes – the ongoing support they need to make lifestyle decisions that can reverse prediabetes and reduce the risk that their condition will develop into type 2 diabetes.

“Health2047 is committed to developing system-level solutions to healthcare’s biggest challenges,” said Lawrence Cohen, Health2047’s CEO. “With 84 million Americans living with prediabetes, our spin out of First Mile Care is a critical step toward transforming chronic care and saving the U.S. healthcare industry trillions of dollars.”

The First Mile Care platform is based on the proven National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a coaching program shown to reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 58% compared to placebo. The program recognizes that if lifestyle changes are to be successful, coaching needs to be easy and consistent. This ongoing support provides individuals with the support they need toreduce the risk that their condition will develop into type 2 diabetes. First Mile Care will provide access to certified coaches nearby at an affordable price that is often completely covered by health insurance.

With $2 million in seed funding, a seasoned founding team, and significant market interest in its approach to combatting chronic disease, First Mile Care is embarking on a mission to cut in half the number of people in the U.S. with prediabetes by 2028. Medicare reimbursement for the National DPP began in April 2018, making it affordable for millions of people with prediabetes to access the preventive care they need, while a growing number of private health plans are also including CDC-recognized programs in health benefits as well.

“Fighting chronic disease requires starting with a scalable approach,” said First Mile Care Founder and CEO, and former Procter & Gamble GM of New Business Healthcare, Karl P. Ronn. “We must build solutions that are both affordable and accessible to everyone in the United States. First Mile Care will establish a network of certified coaches – called First Mile Coaches – in the vast majority of the 42,000 U.S. ZIP codes, enabling coaches to meet people where they live and help them make better lifestyle choices.”

First Mile Care is the second company in a year to spin out of Health2047, a Silicon Valley business formation and commercialization enterprise launched by the American Medical Association (AMA) in 2016. Health2047’s first spin out, Akiri, is building a trusted network that enables health information to move seamlessly and securely throughout the U.S. healthcare system.

“A new approach to preventing chronic conditions is long overdue,” said Dr. James L. Madara, CEO of the American Medical Association (AMA). “By reframing the issue from a ‘health care problem’ to a ‘personal care opportunity,’ First Mile Care is addressing the shortcomings of a system designed for acute care delivery. The AMA is excited by this scalable, on-demand approach to engaging the community, peers, physicians, and technologists to transform chronic care in the United States.”
